< < Back to john-glenn-dominates-west-muskingum-2The John Glenn Little Muskies continued their early season success Friday with a 48-12 win over the West Muskingum Tornadoes.
The Muskies (3-0) dominated the Tornadoes’ defense on the ground, rushing for 394 yards and five touchdowns. Do-it-all running back Blake Atkins led the charge with 147 of those yards and two touchdowns.
After both teams began by punting on their first drives, the Muskies got on the board first with a 17-yard touchdown run by Tanner Morton to take a 6-0 lead.
After a three-and-out by the Tornadoes, Atkins returned a punt, shifted through the West Muskingum coverage, and sprinted 69 yards for a touchdown, putting the Muskies up 13-0 in the first quarter.
A few series later, West Muskingum (0-3) finally got on the board, as Jaden Gianettino realed in a screen pass from quarterback Seth Mirgon and muscled his way into the end zone, cutting the Muskies lead to 13-6 in the second quarter.
But that was as close as the Tornadoes would get. On the next two Muskie drives, Atkins found the end zone on 55-yard and 31-yard touchdown runs, pushing the Muskie lead to 27-6 late in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, the Muskies added to their lead even more, as Caleb Waiters and Sean Witlow both found the end zone, further increasing the advantage to 48-6.
The Tornadoes finally found the end zone again late in the fourth quarter. Mirgon connected with receiver Cory Miller, who took the pass 35 yards for a touchdown to make the score 48-12, as it stood to the end. Mirgon finished the game 16-of-32 for 162 yards and two touchdowns through the air to lead the Tornadoes.
