Rio Thumps Pikeville 4-1
< < Back to rio-thumps-pikeville-4-1Rio Grande dominated Pikeville Wednesday night with a 4-1 victory. With a big win, this is the first time Rio beat the Bears by more than two goals.
The RedStorm improved 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the Mid-South Conference, as well as equaling the single-season school record for wins.
The RedStorm outshot the Bears 13-9 on offense and applied constant defensive pressure throughout the first half, leaving the Bears with little offensive room to score.
Freshman Carrie Mathes scrambled past two defenders and led the RedStorm with a goal at the 12:22 mark.
Pikeville’s goalkeeper, Chelsea Schulte, earlier declined Kasey Crow’s header, but Crow bounced back with an easy shot right after to make it 2-0.
Karla Garn scored Rio’s third goal before intermission, assisted by Courtney Young.
“I was very pleased on our performance by halftime, and how we carried over to the second half,” Rio coach Callum Morris said. “It’s tough keeping up that mentality but our girls did a good job fighting through.”
Pikeville’s only goal of the contest came from Kayla Scott, assisted by Kaitlyn Abdon at the 69:18 mark.
The RedStorm travel to Cambellsville University on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
