A group of hunters provided an unintentional scare for the Athens-Meigs Educational Service Center, causing a lockdown on Friday.

Athens County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the center, which also houses the Athens City Schools preschool program, in Chauncey to secure the building after a report of shots fired was called in at around 10:30 a.m.

“Any time there is a concern of something like that, the school automatically goes on lockdown,” said Sheriff Patrick Kelly. “Deputies went through the school to assure people there was no danger.”

The shots ended up being the result of hunters who were not on school grounds.

“It’s just so quiet out there, the shots can be heard very clearly,” Kelly said.

Deputies spoke with the hunters and the school building was reopened. No charges were filed in the case.
