Ohio Breaks MAC 3-Point Record In Rout Over UMBC

It took nearly 14 years, but Western Michigan’s Mid-American Conference single-game record of 17 made 3-pointers fell today. In a complete rout of the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (1-11), Ohio (5-6) sank a whopping 19-of-35 treys en route to an 84-36 win.
Guards Kiyanna Black and Mariah Byard led the record-breaking performance by each sinking five 3-pointers of their own. As a matter of fact, each player only took one shot from within the 3-point arc.
Five other Bobcats contributed with at least one trey in Ohio’s most lopsided victory of the season.
Ohio controlled the game throughout, amassing a 51-22 lead going into the half. The Bobcats outrebounded the Retrievers 48-25 and won the steals battle 13-5.
Ohio head coach Bob Boldon has stressed high-intensity defense all season and it paid off Monday.
UMBC, the losers of 11 straight, only shot 14-of-44 from the field and committed 22 turnovers. 6-foot-6 center Bridgett O’Donnell racked up 10 points and three boards, but with Ohio’s hot shooting from outside, there was not a significant sense of urgency to get into the paint with O’Donnell.
Black led all scorers with 18 points, but guard Kat Yelle finished three rebounds away from a double-double with 11 points and seven boards.
Following the blowout, Ohio will seek a 1-0 start in conference play against Northern Illinois (4-5).
