Rio Grande’s Thomas Named NAIA Player Of The Week
< < Back toRio Grande’s leading scorer and point guard Brianna Thomas has been named the NAIA National Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Thomas was chosen based on her play from Jan. 6-12 and was selected out of a pool of both conference and independent award winners. The junior was announced as the Mid-South Conference player of the week earlier this week.
Thomas’ most impressive performance of the year came on Jan. 11 in the RedStorm’s overtime victory over Shawnee State. The Maplewood, N.J., native recorded the first known triple-double in Rio Grande program history. She posted a team-high 29 points and 11 assists, while also grabbing 10 rebounds. Thomas is now averaging 19.8 points for the season.
On the year, Thomas ranks in the top 10 nationally in steals (first, 70), total points (third, 337), steals per game (third, 4.12) and total assists (fifth, 94). She also leads Rio Grande in each of these categories.
The RedStorm will return to the court on Thursday when they host St. Catherine. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
