Ring And Run Scam Can Cost Curious Phone Customers
< < Back to ring-and-run-scam-can-cost-curious-phone-customersCell phone users in Kentucky are being warned to be alert for a new scam called "The One-Ring Scam."
Kentucky State Police say there are reports across the country of "ring and run" incidents on cell phones.
They say returning those missed calls from an unknown number can be costly for the cell phone owner.
State police Sgt. Michael Webb says scammers profit from people curious enough to return that missed call.
He says their accounts can be charged about $20 for the call and $9 for every additional minute.
Webb urges people not to return calls they don't recognize.
Better Business Bureau officials say such "phone cramming" occurs when automated dialers send out thousands of calls to random numbers.
Most of the area codes are from the Caribbean islands.
