Marietta Set For Spring Ball
< < Back to marietta-set-spring-ballAfter changes to their schedule, the Marietta College Pioneers will open the 2014 baseball season in Beckley, W.Va., with four games over the weekend.
The first will be played against Denison University on Saturday at 1:45 p.m., followed by a matchup against Case Western Reserve University. The Pioneers will finish up with two more games against Case Western Reserve on Sunday afternoon.
The Pioneers will look to begin the 2014 campaign on a good note after being eliminated in the 2013 Division III NCAA Midwest Regional, ending their bid for a third straight National Championship.
The Pioneers played two games against each of their opening weekend opponents last year, with drastically different results. Marietta defeated Denison in both games by scores of 14-2 and 11-4. However against Case Western, the Pioneers fell 10-8 and 9-4 at Don Schaly Stadium.
The Case Western Reserve Spartans are 4-0 in 2014 season. Denison, like Marietta, will begin its season Saturday with an 11 a.m. matchup against the Spartans.
Players to Watch
For the Spartans, keep an eye on infielder Andrew Gronski. The junior is batting .714 with two homeruns and 10 RBI. Gronski has been a key player for the Spartans in their 4-0 start. Last year against the Pioneers, Gronski went four for nine with three runs scored and two RBI in two games.
Ryan Mulligan is the big man returning to the Big Red. The junior infielder was second for Denison in RBI during the 2013 season with 34 and he looks to be a big part of the Denison offense this season.
