First Same-Sex Marriage License Issued in Athens County
< < Back to“Happy, but kind of shocked,” is how Paul Jones of Athens described his reaction when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Friday that same-sex marriage is legal in Ohio and all other states.
“Can I change my Facebook status to ‘engaged?’” Jones recalled his partner of nearly 20 years, Jeremy Webster, asking as they watched CNN.
On Tuesday, Webster and Jones became the first same-sex couple to be issued a marriage license by Athens County Probate Court.
Jones said they purposely waited a few days to apply for a license, trying not to be the first in Athens County to get one (and thereby avoid calls from news reporters). As luck would have it, they were still the first.
