Hookah smoking is on the rise in the United States among teens and millennials, some of whom believe it’s an acceptable alternative to cigarette smoking. Researcher Amir Farnoud at OHIO’s Russ College of Engineering and Technology is investigating the effect various forms of hookah smoke has on the surfactant, a lining in the lung that, when compromised, makes it harder for the lungs to function properly. Farnoud is an assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and recently received an Ohio University Research Committee award for his research into this topic.
