COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – The top prosecutor of federal crimes in the southern half of Ohio says he’s stepping down next month.

U.S. Attorney Carter Stewart oversaw investigations in cities including Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton and southeast Ohio.

The 46-year-old Stewart said Friday that his last day is March 11, after which he’ll join a Columbus-area foundation.

Cases that Stewart’s office prosecuted include a decades-old central Ohio gang, terrorism-related indictments and a pill mill doctor whose illegal distribution of drugs led to four fatal overdoses.

President Barack Obama nominated Stewart, and the U.S. Senate confirmed him in 2009.

Stewart’s resignation follows the departure earlier this month of Steven Dettelbach, the former U.S. Attorney in Cleveland.

It’s common for U.S. attorneys to step down as the president who appointed them prepares to leave office.
