Signs Posted Along Ohio’s Highways Return to Previous Font

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – The Ohio Department of Transportation is restoring highway signs to their previous style after federal regulators outlawed the typeface used on dark signs.
The Columbus Dispatch reports regulators reversed course in January and said signs should not use the Clearview font that has been featured on dark signs with white lettering since 2004.
The state will return to the classic Highway Gothic font. That typeface is still being used on light signs with black lettering, such as speed-limit postings.
Transportation department spokesman Matt Bruning says some Clearview signs will remain posted until about 2036.
While the differences are considered subtle, Clearview letters have serifs and are bolder compared to Highway Gothic.
Bruning says the switch was a case of following orders, not in response to any safety concerns.
