1st Ohio Police Agencies Adopt Standards on Deadly Force

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – The state says the first four Ohio law enforcement agencies have adopted new standards for use of deadly force by police.
The standards adopted last year permit police to use deadly force only when officers are defending themselves or other people from serious injury or death.
The agencies are the Medina, Coldwater and Colerain police departments and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. The four departments also adopted first-ever standards for police recruiting and hiring, which set a goal of a qualified diverse workforce while providing equal employment opportunity.
The standards were created by Gov. John Kasich’s Ohio Collaborative Community-Police Advisory Board after a series of fatal police shootings.
Ohio law enforcement agencies must adopt the standards as minimum department policies by next year.
