More Than 100 Ohio Police Agencies Pursuing New Standards

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – The state says more than 100 Ohio law enforcement agencies are seeking to adopt new standards for use of deadly force by police.
The standards adopted last year permit police to use deadly force only when officers are defending themselves or other people from serious injury or death.
The Ohio Collaborative Community-Police Advisory Board said Monday that 117 departments are pursuing the statewide standards. The board also says 12 departments have become provisionally or fully certified by meeting the standards, which also include standards for agency recruitment and hiring.
The standards were created by Gov. John Kasich’s advisory board after a series of fatal police shootings.
Ohio law enforcement agencies must adopt the standards as minimum department policies by next year.
