Deadline Key in W.Va. Supreme Court Campaign Finance Case
< < Back to deadline-key-in-w-va-supreme-court-campaign-finance-caseCHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – The state Supreme Court is due to hear arguments from attorneys for two Supreme Court candidates who both hope their awarding of public campaign financing for the May election is upheld.
The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports that both Justice Brent Benjamin and Bill Wooten missed the certification filing deadline of two business days after the close of the candidate filing period.
The State Elections Commission in February decided the deadlines were arbitrary and unreasonable.
A Kanawha County judge overturned the decision earlier this month, ruling that Benjamin’s campaign missed filing and campaign contribution reporting deadlines.
The state Supreme Court will hear the case next week.
