Dozens Enroll in Program Aimed at Treating Opioid Users

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Dozens of people in southwestern Ohio have enrolled in a new program aimed at helping heroin and fentanyl users by directing them to treatment programs instead of jails.
The Dayton Daily News reports more than 50 people have enrolled in the voluntary four-week program known as the Front Door Initiative since it launched in late May.
Authorities say there have been about 800 overdose calls this year in Montgomery County and more than 200 deaths.
The Cornerstone Project, which provides outpatient treatment, says nearly all Dayton police officers and county sheriff’s deputies will learn about the program by the end of July.
The program includes individual counseling sessions, work with medical professionals and sober housing.
