Suspect Wounded in Officer-Involved Shooting
< < Back to suspect-wounded-in-officer-involved-shootingThe Athens County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident involving three officers from the Athens Police Department that resulted in the shooting of a suspect Saturday morning.
Samuel Lott, 18, of Nelsonville, Ohio was treated at Columbus Hospital for a gunshot wound and released into the custody of the Athens Police. He is at the Southeast Ohio Regional Jail waiting for an initial court appearance. He faces charges for receiving stolen property and fleeing and eluding. A second suspect, Jacob Bowens, 19, of Carbon Hill, Ohio faces a receiving stolen property charge.
According to a news release from Athens Police Chief Tom Pyle, officers were responding to a call about the active theft of a vehicle in the Hope Drive area when they identified and pursued a suspect vehicle. The officer involved shooting happened when officers were able to stop the vehicle at one point during the pursuit. After the shooting incident the pursuit started again and ended with a crash at the intersection of Hooper Ridge and State Route 550.
According to the release, Chief Pyle requested the Athens County Sheriff”s Office to investigate the incident because it happened in its jurisdiction. The three Athens officers “have been removed from line-of-duty assignments pending administrative review.”
