Ohio Loses Another Early Lead in Loss to Gardner-Webb
< < Back to ohio-loses-another-early-lead-in-loss-to-gardner-webbOhio Wrestling faced off against Gardner-Webb Sunday looking for a win in their final road match of the season. Unfortunately for Ohio, the Green and White started off hot but would ultimately fall 24-12.
This duel looked awfully similar to Friday’s matchup against Old Dominion. The Bobcats lead 12-0 early against ODU but could not capitalize and too home the loss in that match as well.
Against Gardner-Webb, the Bobcats started out winning three of the first four matches to go up 12-3. Redshirt sophomore Hayden Lee started the duel on a good note for the Bobcats, winning by major decision. Sophomore Cameron Kelly followed Hayden up with a win of his own by technical foul. Kelly has been on a tear lately and has a three-match winning streak. Ohio then split the next two matches. Kevon Powell lost at 141 and Noah Forrider won at 149.
Ohio absolutely dominated Gardner-Webb’s lower weight classes. The Runnin’ Bulldogs needed a shift in momentum after Ohio’s early dominance and they got just that.
After their successful start, the Bobcats lost the next six matches with redshirt junior Cullen Cummings, redshirt sophomore Austin Reese, redshirt sophomore Arsen Ashughyan and redshirt Freshman Bailey Faust all losing in decisions. Redshirt freshman Dontae McGee lost by major decision in weight 184 and redshirt sophomore Devin King lost at 285 by technical fall.
The Green and White will finish the season at home for senior night and will have a pair of duals against American and Appalachian State on Sunday. The dual against American begins at 1 p.m. followed by Appalachian State at 3 p.m. Sunday will also be the first ever wrestling alumni weekend.
