WSAZ reports delegates voted 58-41 in favor of the bill, with one member absent.
The Women’s Commission was created by legislators in 1977 to bring women’s concerns and issues to the attention of lawmakers.
Those in favor of the defunding, say the office is a duplication of services.
But those opposed to the bill say the move signifies that lawmakers do not value the contributions of women.
The bill now goes to the state Senate. If it passes there and is signed by the governor, the Women’s Commission would be defunded by July 1, 2017.
