Violauta Dio to Perform at Ariel Opera House Jan. 21
< < Back toTake a step back in time when the Violauta Duo, Wendell Dobbs, flute, and Júlio Ribeiro Alves, guitar, will perform “Rossiniana” on Sunday, January 21 at 2 p.m. in the Ariel Chamber Theatre. The artists will be using the actual period instruments that the music was written for in the19th century.
The first part of the recital is devoted to opera arias by Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) transcribed for flute and guitar by flutist Jean-Louis Tulou (1786-1865) and guitarist Ferdinand Carulli (1770-1841): two arias from La Gazza Ladra (the Thieving Magpie) and the tour de force, Matilda’s aria from Elizabeth, Queen of England. Both Tulou and Carulli were important figures in 19th century Parsian life—Tulou as Professor at the Paris Conservatory and Carulli as a concert artist and publisher. Operas by Rossini made their Parisian debuts starting in 1821. These arrangements attest in a small way to the extraordinary influence Rossini’s music had on the musical fabric of Parisian society. The duo will perform these transcriptions on period instruments produced in France during the first half of the 19th century.
The second part of the program will feature Dobbs and Alves exploring other repertoire from the early 19th century, all by guitar masters from the era: another work by Carulli, then works by Antonio Nava (1775-1821) and Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829).
Alves and Dobbs are both professors of music at Marshall University and have had a long association with the Ariel having performed numerous times there. Dobbs is principal flute in The Ohio Valley Symphony and Alves wife, Kristen, is an OVS violinist.
