The crowd erupts.
Vinton County (13-0, 7-0 TVC-Ohio) completes their season sweep of Alexander (10-5, 4-3 TVC-Ohio), defeating the Lady Spartans 54-51.
Leading the way for the Lady Vikings was freshman Morgan Bentley, scoring 14 points and contributing 5 steals. Her sister Cassie had 12 points and 15 rebounds for her second straight double-double. Josie Ousley and Erin Jones each contributed 10 points.
“Our offense is for everybody to get open,” said Vinton County Head Coach Rod Bentley. “We had four or five girls in double figures tonight, we got out to an early lead, and it was a good win for us.”
Alexander was led by Rachel Richardson with 15 points, but this was an off night for her standards. She shot 5-25 from the field, including 1-8 from beyond the arc.
Kena Rice, who shot 6-9 from the field, was second in scoring for the Lady Spartans with 10 points.
“What we wanted to do tonight was we wanted to concentrate on Rice and Richardson,” said Bentley. “We feel like they’re two of their leading scorers and we just wanted to continue to put pressure on them and make every basket hard for them.”
Vinton County jumped out to an early 15-4 lead, with the opening points scored on five three-pointers by four different players. Alexander battled back to be within two points at halftime.
Alexander had the lead twice in the game. They made the opening shot of the game for an early 2-0 lead, and after trailing by two points at halftime, they scored the opening four points of the third quarter to take a 24-22 lead.
After that, Vinton County went on an 11-4 run and never relinquished the lead.
Vinton County takes their undefeated record on the road and out of the TVC-Ohio as they take on Unioto in a rescheduled game on Wednesday, while Alexander also goes out-of-conference as they play host to Southeastern.
