CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – Appalachian Power says it will begin applying herbicides by helicopter later this spring in order to maintain rights of way for some power lines.

Utility forester Travis Klinebriel says aerial maintenance application is generally used in less populated areas where it’s hard for ground crews to clear the rights of way. Other means are used in populated areas and near parks, ponds and other sensitive areas.

Customers with questions can call toll-free (800) 642-3622 or write American Electric Power, Bluefield District, Attn: Transmission Forestry, 2507 Washington St., Bluefield, WV 24701; or Charleston District, Attn: Transmission Forestry, P.O. Box 1986, Charleston, WV 25327.

Landowners who prefer to be responsible for clearing the right of way crossing their property instead of having aerial application may enter into a maintenance agreement with AEP.
