NELSONVILLE – In a surprise move, Nelsonville City Council President Ed Mash sent an email to city officials early Monday morning announcing he was stepping down as president and resigning from council altogether.

Mash had previously told The Athens Messenger that while he enjoys serving the citizens of Nelsonville and ran for change on a platform of open government and accountability, the job of being council president demands much of his personal time. He said that It has become a full-time job without anything more than a small monthly stipend.

Mash has also raised concerns during meetings about the effects of social media, offering that false rumors on Facebook about the city’s actions and plans for its future are unfortunate and difficult to counteract.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the city had not yet received a resignation letter. The next regular Nelsonville City Council meeting is June 11.
