CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Center for Substance Abuse Treatment has awarded $130,000 to West Virginia University to support mental health and substance abuse treatment programs.

The grant was announced Thursday by Democratic U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin and Republican U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito. Manchin said the funding will help train nurse practitioners, who will work with West Virginians affected by addiction.

Capito said West Virginia’s top education institutions are a necessary element of making sure health care professionals have what they need as they confront substance abuse and other mental health issues.
