Lady Bulldogs Pick up First Win of the Season
< < Back to lady-bulldogs-pick-up-first-win-of-the-seasonThe Athens Lady Bulldogs overcame the New Lexington Lady Panthers 51-46 during their Monday night matchup.
From the tip, Athens seemed to be in control.
Athens’ on-ball pressure forced New Lexington to make mistakes throughout the game and from there the Lady Bulldogs seemed to capitalize every opportunity they could.
However, New Lexington showed life in the second quarter scoring 18 points. The Lady Panthers second quarter kept the game close and by half-time, the Lady Bulldogs only led 29-26.
The game remained competitive for all four quarters as the Lady Bulldogs fought to retain the lead.
Laura Manderick was a leading force for the Lady Bulldogs, cutting through the Lady Panthers defense the entire game.
Manderick maintained control of the ball for Athens and her ball-handling skills and athleticism helped the Lady Bulldogs stay ahead.
By the end of the third quarter, the Lady Bulldogs led 40-31 with the help of 9 points by Kaylee Stewart.
Stewart helped lift the Lady Bulldogs over New Lexington with a defensive second half, gathering seven rebounds.
In the final minutes, Athens was in the bonus as the Lady Panthers began fouling in an attempt to send the Lady Bulldogs to the line to force them to miss free throws in order to get the ball back.
But to no avail.
The Lady Bulldogs went 58 percent from the line, making 7-of-12 free throws on the night.
Stewart finished the game with a double-double, recording 12 points, 10 rebounds, and one assist.
Manderick went 3-for-4 from behind the three-point line, finishing with 16 points, one rebound, and one assist.
The Athens Lady Bulldogs will look to continue their momentum on Monday, December 3, in McAfee Gymnasium against Wellston High School.
