After a victory against the Wahama Lady White Falcons Wednesday in Pomeroy, the Meigs Lady Marauders looked to continue the defense of their homecourt Thursday when the Nelsonville-York Lady Buckeyes came to town.

Maybe it was the short turnaround of a back-to-back, maybe it was the suffocating 1-2-2 full court press the Lady Buckeyes generously applied, but no matter what it was, it wasn’t pretty.

The Lady Buckeyes left with a 54-36 victory over the Lady Marauders, using a dominant opening quarter and offensive rebounds aplenty to secure the win.

As the game opened up, Meigs looked like a team that had already played a game just 24 hours prior. Nelsonville-York held Meigs to just two points in the first frame, as they leapt out to a 15-2 lead at the end of one quarter.

Meigs would wake up in the latter parts of the game and get the game to single digits at multiple points, but the hole had already been dug, and the Lady Marauders didn’t have quite enough firepower to hoist themselves all the way out of it.

The Lady Marauders’ comeback was further hindered by an inability to end their defensive stops with defensive rebounds. Nelsonville-York totaled 10 offensive rebounds Thursday, and retained possession by being active on the glass and forcing the ball out of bounds on Meigs a handful of time as well. The extra possessions kept Meigs from ever gaining any steam, and resulted in some easy baskets for the Lady Buckeyes, with Haley Hurd benefiting especially on her way to a six-point seven-rebound night.

As to who was the top performer for Nelsonville-York, sophomore Mackenzie Hurd put together another impressive statline of 16 points, five assists and six steals. Grace Sinnott also got into double digits with 13 points.

For Meigs, Mallory Hawley led the team with 11 points while also grabbing six rebounds, blocking three shots and dishing three assists. Bre Lilly canned three triples on her way to nine points, and Rylee Lisle finished the game with six points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

Meigs has some time to rest after their back-to-back, as they don’t see action until next Thursday when they travel to Albany to play the Alexander Lady Spartans.
