ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — The Ohio Department of Transportation has proposed closing the Johnson Road connection to U.S. 33 in spring 2021 to reduce the chance of serious vehicle crashes.

ODOT is seeking public comment on the proposal.

The proposed project would include closing the median at the Johnson Road intersection, removing the existing left turn lanes, and extending the guardrail. A turnaround point would be added at the end of Johnson Road.

The River Road connection would remain in place, as the road does not have direct access to S.R. 682.

According to ODOT, there have been 26 crashes at this intersection between 2009 and 2018.

Last October, two men died in a rollover crash near the intersection.

If the project is approved, drivers who normally use these interchanges would use the S.R. 682 corridor through The Plains. ODOT conducted an analysis of several intersections in this corridor, including the intersection at Johnson Road and Connett Road, and the intersection at Poston Road and Walnut Street.
