Following a devastating loss against Vinton County Thursday, the Marauders traveled back to Pomeroy looking to bounce back in a big way.
It was a physical first half as the fouls mounted for both sides.
But that’s just the game the Marauders wanted. Their pesky ball hawing defense forced a number of Spartan turnovers and allowed them to jump out to an early 12-10 lead.
The tensions boiled over in the second. Spartan forward Kara Meeks picked up a technical foul for a six-point swing in the Marauders favor.
Meigs carried out the momentum to go into the locker with a 32-24 advantage.
The third quarter saw more of the same as Mallory Hawley took over to extend the lead to 14 going into the fourth.
Hawley torched the Spartans on senior night with transition vision and toughness around the rim.
“I think that’s a big thing – trust,” said Meigs Head Coach Heath Hudson about the Marauders’ ball movement. “There were several times where we threw the ball away a little bit. I think at parts we were a little too unselfish. But we are learning, and we are getting better at that.”
The Marauders took control of the game and never looked back as they coasted to a huge 65-55 win.
“She has earned a lot of accolades here,” said Hudson about Hawley’s senior night performance. “But most of all, she has earned respect from her teammates, her coaches, and her peers. I think that’s the biggest thing she will take away from her career.”
