“Excursions: Jazz Motifs w/ Dr. Art Cromwell”
Saturday’s program will curate an eclectic historiography of Chicago Jazz from the inception of Jazz recordings and broadcast circulation (1920s). At this juncture, Chicago was becoming a repository of this new form of instrumentalized Blues. A distinctive “Chicago style.”
With the appearance of New Orleans innovators King Oliver and Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton, regional Jazz practitioners like Earl Hines began absorbing aspects of New Orleans music, and in the process crafted a new style identified with Chicago, making it an important center of Jazz‘s growth and development, from 1920s-to the present.
This Saturday’s Excursions will present an array of Chicago big bands, pianists, combos, with a sampling of those famous “Chicago Tenors.” Celebrating artists from various eras, and a variety of styles. All in the spirit of the Art Ensemble’s credo;
Great Music, Ancient to the Future.
