ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Tuesday night’s matchup between Ohio (14-11) and Buffalo (12-13) had implications in Mid-American Conference standings with the two teams tied at sixth coming into the night.

The Bobcats and Bulls met in early January as Buffalo came away with a narrow three-point win. Tuesday Ohio’s offense started slow, but solid defense throughout helped the Bobcats prevail to an 85-61 victory.

Ohio got off to a fast start going up 4-0, but after the first two field goals the Bobcats offense struggled. Shooting only 11-34 from the field and 2-9 from three. Buffalo also struggled to make shots, only making eight of 29 attempts in the first 20 minutes.

Despite the shooting woes, senior guard DeVon Baker said the Bobcats kept their confidence and just continued to shoot.

“We just continue to stay aggressive, stay confident and everybody believes in each other,” Baker said. “Just make sure everybody keeps shooting be confident and believe it’s going to go in.”

Baker recorded his second-straight game of 11 points and was one of five Bobcats to score double digit points. Head Coach Jeff Boals spoke on the significance of having multiple players scoring.

“We have multiple guys who can score, we started that way at the start of the year,” Boals said. “They just share the basketball, they’re selfless. They don’t care who scores, they play well together.”

Even with the offense clicking, the defense for Ohio remained consistent throughout. Buffalo had one of its worst shooting performances of the season, shooting only 34% on the night.

Ohio also dominated in time leading. With just under 33 minutes, they were in control for most of the night which made it difficult for Buffalo to make a game changing run.

With the win Ohio improves to 7-6 in MAC play and takes sole possession of fifth place in the standings. It will now prepare to take on Central Michigan on the road Saturday.
