NELSONVILLE, Ohio (WOUB) — The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes came out striking in its matchup against the Wellston Golden Rockets. Wellston struggled to take care of the ball from the beginning, coughing up two fumbles on back-to-back possessions.

The Buckeyes took advantage, scoring touchdowns off both turnovers. Gavin Richards, running back for Nelsonville-York, was on fire. His massive breakaway to close the first quarter put the Buckeyes up 21-0.

Wellston came out in the second quarter with a will to score. Wes Briggs hit his target Kale Faught for a 55-yard touchdown to bring hope back to the Golden Rockets’ sideline.

On their next possession, Briggs’ pass was tipped and taken to the house by Landon Inman. The point after was short, keeping the score at 27-6.

Just a few minutes later, Landon Inman comes right back with another touchdown. This time he’s on the offensive side of the ball, putting his Buckeyes up 33-6 at the half.

Nelsonville-York kept the momentum alive in the second half, scoring two touchdowns to put them ahead 46-6. Wellston then answered with a touchdown of their own but came up short on the point after.

Nelsonville-York was nearly perfect on third downs today, running screen passes that Wellston just couldn’t find the answer to. The Golden Rockets seemed to run into a wall each time they caught a break.

The style of football played in the Tri-Valley Conference was displayed at its finest today. Nelsonville-York showed Wellston how to efficiently pound the run game and maintain a short passing game that keeps those chains moving.

Overall, the Golden Rockets were no match for the Buckeyes, getting dominated in every facet of the game. Nelsonville-York kept scoring at a steady pace that allowed them to kill the clock and cruise through the fourth quarter with no worries. The Buckeyes move to 3-0 in TVC play and hope to keep this streak going against 2-5 Alexander High School next week.
