Southern’s energy bled off the court and into the stands as Tornado fans filled the gym for tournament play.
The first set had a quick start with Southern’s offense taking an immediate lead. Their strongest players Kassidy Chaney, Lila Cooper, and Kiersten Rose took turns at the net laying down balls at Trimble’s feet. Tornadoes took the first set 25-12.
Trimble was riled up and ready to fight back for set two. Alyvia Porter’s aces gave the Tomcats the leeway they needed to tie up the score with the Tornadoes. She served five aces total for the game, including the match point for set two. As Porter kept up the power behind the 30-foot line, Trimble’s offense kept their guard – and hands – up at the net to block Southern. Both teams fought for the final points, but Trimble won set two 27-25.
Both teams began waning in energy after a heated aggressive second set. Several points were given to both teams from errors in net play and dead balls. Southern faithful never gave up on their team and inspired the Tornadoes to push through the set and walk off the court with a second winning set under their belts. The final score of set three was 25-18 in favor of Southern.
Encouraged by their second win of the evening, Southern powered through set four, ready to take the game and move on to District Finals. Trimble gave a good fight, scoring four points on the Tornado defense in their set point, but Southern’s stamina ultimately clinched the set 25-18.
Southern will officially be moving on to the district finals in the Southeast District in division four. They will play TVC-Hocking Foe, Waterford on Saturday at Southeastern for a chance at the district title. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m.
