Marietta takes down Athens in out of conference battle

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) – Athens hosted Marietta Monday in an early-season non-conference game. The Lady Bulldogs fell short of the Tigers 55-48. 

In their previous matchup, Athens won against the Minford Falcons at home winning 54-35.

In the early minutes of the first quarter, Athens had a 10-4 lead. Then Marietta stepped up and made their next few shots cutting down the lead. At the end of the quarter, with a slight lead of 13-12, the Bulldogs will hold on heading into the second. 

For the second quarter, and the rest of the game, this matchup would be a back-and-fourth battle. When one team got the lead, the other shortly took it back a few plays later. With less then two minutes to go in the first half, Athens was down four points. Shortly after, back-to-back threes were made by Olivia Smart and Quinn Banks. Even with the efforts by the Bulldogs, Marietta would take the lead back 24-23 heading into the locker rooms. 

The third quarter would be the highest scoring quarter for the game. Athens ended up scoring 17 points and Marietta scored 18. For the Bulldogs in the third, they made multiple three-pointers keeping them in the ball game. At the end of the third quarter, Marietta still held the lead with a score of 42-40. 

The fourth quarter was the most crucial quarter as teams shot more free throws. The Bulldogs went 8/17 from the stripe. Marietta shot 15/22 from the free throw line on the night.

At the end of the game for the Bulldogs, Asa Holcombe contributed 13 points, five rebounds and five steals. Olivia Smart would have nine points, six steals, and four assists. Bristol Stump had nine points, four rebounds and two assists. 

The Lady Bulldogs take on the River Valley Raiders next at home on Thursday for their first in conference game.
