The Athens-Hocking Recycling Centers have a plan to continue funding its operations
< < Back to ahrc-has-plan-to-continue-funding-its-operationsATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — The Athens-Hocking Recycling Centers may survive for longer than expected.
The center went into a financial crisis in November when Athens signed with Rumpke to haul its garbage. The city was AHRC’s largest customer.
Last week, the Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District board voted against a parcel fee that would have allowed the district to buy the center and its facilities.
AHRC’s Executive Director Crissa Cummings has to go to plan B for funding.
Cummings said the newly formed waste management council of governments will pay a lease to the recycling center to use its sorting and composting facilities.
The money for the lease, she said, will come from “income generated from the sale of recycling, including compost, and fees charged for hauling.”
Some of this revenue could be at risk if Rumpke, the city’s garbage hauler, decides to start taking materials to its new facility in Columbus instead of AHRC.
A Rumpke representative was not available for comment.
