The Buckeyes were looking to bounce back from a loss to the Warren Warriors on Thursday. On the other side of the net, the Tomcats were hoping for a win in their first game of the season. Unfortunately for Trimble, Nelsonville-York came out swinging and the Buckeyes won the match in straight sets.
The Tomcats kept it close in the first set, keeping the Buckeyes’ defense on their toes. However, the Buckeyes responded, going on a three-point run. This put Nelsonville-York up 15 to 10, forcing Trimble to call a timeout. Coming out of the timeout it was all Buckeyes. Nelsonville-York’s offense was on fire for the remainder of the set, they took it 25 to 14.
The beginning of the second set was back-and-forth, both teams stayed aggressive on offense. That was until the Buckeyes took charge again. Senior Kyleigh Warren played a significant role in Nelsonville-York’s offensive success. Warren had ten kills on the night, six in the second set alone. The Tomcats went on a four-point run to try to close the gap at the end of the set. But the Buckeyes fed Warren again for another kill, winning the set 25 to 14.
Despite losses in the first two sets, Trimble stayed composed in the third. They stuck with the Buckeyes trading points back and forth. After many long rallies, an electric kill from Sophomore Bailee Bickley tied it up for the Tomcats, 17 to 17. Though Trimble gained momentum, they could not close out the set. Nelsonville-York went on to win the set 25 to 20.
“We knew it was going to be a big crowd” Buckeye head Coach Wayne Dicken said. “We wanted to contain our emotions and play solid, fundamental volleyball.”
Trimble will travel to Fisher Catholic to take on the Irish on Monday. Nelsonville-York hopes to continue this success in their TVC-Ohio matchup with Alexander on Tuesday.
