Buckeyes put on clinic and run all over Rockets
< < Back toWELLSTON, Ohio (WOUB) – It was homecoming night for the Wellston Golden Rockets Friday night, but the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes crashed the party, winning 39-14.
The Buckeyes came out of the gates running, completing a long opening drive without attempting a single pass which was capped off by a Dakota Cunningham touchdown. With 8:21 remaining in the first quarter, Nelsonville-York led 6-0.
Wellston looked to answer back, driving all the way to Nelsonville-York’s 12-yard line, but their drive was put to a halt as Landen Inman swatted away a pass in the end zone on fourth-and-7.
The following drive would be short-lived, as the Golden Rockets forced a three-and-out. Wellston carried that momentum into yet another long drive that came down to one play. On fourth-and-10 on NY’s 20-yard line, the Buckeyes’ Alec Thompson picked off Wellston quarterback Johnny Scott in the back corner of the end zone.
After a couple of scoreless drives, NY took over deep in their own territory. On their third play of the drive, quarterback Cameron Sullivan pitched the ball to Austin Gautier, who drew in the Wellston defense, and then threw it right over them to Landen Inman for an 81-yard touchdown, putting the Buckeyes in control by a score of 12-0.
NY wasn’t done yet, as Sullivan punched in a quarterback sneak from less than a yard out to put the Buckeyes up 18-0.
Nelsonville-York kept their foot on the gas in the second half and cruised to victory.
The Buckeyes controlled the ground all game long, rushing for 313 yards as a team.
NY (5-2, 3-0) will look to keep it rolling next week, as they will play host to the Alexander Spartans.
Wellston (5-2, 2-1) will look to bounce back at Athens, who is undefeated and sits atop the TVC-Ohio.
