Stewart, Ohio (WOUB): The Federal Hocking Lancers hosted the Belpre Golden Eagles in a heated conference matchup where the Lancers walked away with a 77-49 victory.
After losing to Waterford Federal, Hocking was looking for revenge, while Belpre aimed to keep the momentum going after their win against Alexander. The Golden Eagles started with the ball, but strong defense from both teams caused 5 of the first 12 points to come from the charity stripe. The Lancers started to take the lead when they managed to steal the ball five times, leading 20-9.
In the second quarter, Brenlee Cottrail took the game into her hands, scoring 11 of the 28 Federal Hocking points while still getting her teammates involved. Near the end of the second quarter, Belpre tried to mount a comeback with Gracie Bills Leading the way, but the stingy defense was able to slow her down, making it hard for the Golden Eagles to score. The Lancers stayed ahead by sticking to the fundamentals, making good passes, and taking high-percentage shots. The first half ended with Federal Hocking ahead 37-24.
In the second half, The Lancers came out on a mission, and that was to make the easy shots. They racked up even more steals and made the simple layups. After an 18-2 run, Federal Hocking extended their lead 55-26. At the end of the third quarter, the Lancer’s offense was in full swing, and Cottrail said it came from all their practice. “We’ve been working a lot in practice, and that’s where this all is coming from it’s just practice.” Throughout the fourth quarter, the writing was on the wall, and federal hocking finished strong.
Head coach Amos Cottrail also talked about how good the practice this week was. “We had two great days of practice leading up to this so we felt pretty good coming in.” Cottrail ended with 27 points as well as five rebounds, five assists, and four steals, putting her mark on the game and driving the Lancers toward the win.
Federal Hocking stays home to defend against the Chippewa on Saturday. Belpre travels to Warren on Monday.
