ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB)– The Ohio Bobcats played hard and fast tonight as the Stony Brook Seawolves entered Bird Arena for a fierce battle. It was Kid’s Night, so many mini-hockey players were looking to the Bobcats for a big win. Ohio goalie Garrett Alderman was solid in net, pitching a shutout to push Ohio to a 5-0 victory over the Seawolves.

The first period featured both teams showcasing their physicality all over the ice. Stony Brook was aggressive on the forecheck forcing Ohio into uncharacteristic turnovers in the neutral zone.

Neither team was able to capitalize on their scoring chances with each goalie strongly defending their crease. Both teams took out their frustrations on one another leading to multiple post-whistle scrums and a couple of roughing penalties. Ultimately the first period would end in a 0-0 tie with each team hoping to be the first to strike.

The Bobcats were an entirely different team in the second period and played connected hockey. Stony Brook struggled to contain Ohio’s dynamic offense resulting in the first goal of the game coming twelve minutes into the period off the stick of Bobcat forward Hollander Thompson with help from Jack Glen and Luc Reeve.

The Cats were buzzing and were rewarded with scoring chance after scoring chance. Kevin Kasper was the next Ohio player to find the back of the net with an unassisted goal just five minutes left in the second, 2-0.

Stony Brook had a couple of good shifts following the second Ohio goal but would end up leaving Barron Stibbe alone in front of the net to tap in the rebound assisted by Drew Gardner and Noah Holt making it 3-0 Bobcats.

The Seawolves started the third period with fast skating and strong checking, pushing back against the Bobcats. They would continue to battle all period, but with just five minutes left in the game, Mathieu Ovaert went top shelf to make it 4-0 Cats. Ohio’s offense was too overwhelming, Noah Holt would score the fifth and final goal assisted by Stibbe and Drake Nabonzy to carry Ohio to their fourth straight win.

All of the kids in attendance left with smiles on their faces and Head Coach Barry Schutte talked about how much it meant to have them in the stands, “It means everything. The relationship that our players are able to develop and the bonds that they make with these young kids in this community are pretty special.”

Stony Brook will be back Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. for Mental Health Awareness night with hopes to end Ohio’s win streak.
