NELSONVILLE, Ohio (WOUB) — The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes (10-5, 5-2 TVC-Ohio) invited River Valley (1-17, 0-8 TVC-Ohio) into Ben Wagner Gymnasium for their second game against one another. While they only won by five the last time around, Nelsonville-York made sure to not keep it as close this time around. The Buckeyes defeated the Raiders 81-72.

Nelsonville-York wasted no time getting a lead in their highest scoring game of the season. Alec Thompson opened the first quarter on a roll. The junior guard made his first four shots from the field and finished the first quarter with 8 points.

The Buckeye offense was moving fast out from the moment they tipped off. They utilized their size advantage and scored nearly every point in the paint. In the first quarter alone, head coach Blaine Gabriel had eight different players get minutes. He kept his guys fresh, and utilized his bench as their lead grew.

Nelsonville-York went into the locker room with smiles on their faces, as they were up 44-26.

Out of the break, the Buckeyes kept their foot on the gas and pressed the lead, but River Valley made sure to keep Nelsonville-York honest. Raiders guard, Braden Bennett began to catch fire from deep and the River Valley offense was gaining momentum. The Buckeyes held a 63-46 lead entering the final quarter.

The Raiders ended up getting within single digits of the Buckeyes in the fourth quarter. River Valley outscored Nelsonville-York 26-18 in the quarter, but Briant Call’s 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists would be enough for the win.

Four of Nelsonville-York’s starters scored in double digits in the win. Alec Thompson tallied 20 points, while Cameron Sullivan had 14.

On the other hand, Bennett and Austin Richardson combined for 48 points on the night and did the bulk of the scoring for River Valley.

The Raiders continue the hunt for their second win of the season against Athens on Friday, while Nelsonville-York will face Alexander on Friday.
