NELSONVILLE, Ohio (WOUB) — The Nelsonville York Buckeyes (12-7; 6-4 TVC-Ohio) met up with the visiting Vinton County Vikings (9-3; 8-3 TVC-Ohio) for the second time this season. The game resulted in a Nelsonville-York win, by a score of 69 to 49

This matchup was extremely fast paced, and neither team could get out to a comfortable lead. The first quarter was highlighted by Buckeye senior Briant Call, who had 11 points in the first, and finished the game with 21. It was 17-13 after one.

The second was much the same. The Vikings ran their offense through Cobra Sharp, who finished the night with 20 points. His performance allowed VC to keep it tight with the Buckeyes, and heading into the break it was 30-24 Nelsonville-York.

Neither team settled into their offenses, and there were a lot of points scored in transition because of this.

Through the entire third quarter, Vinton County tried a full court trap that the Buckeyes had no trouble breaking. Briant Call scored the first eight points for Nelsonville-York in this period, all around the rim. Under his leadership, the buckeyes steadily held their lead, 48-41 at the end of three.

The fourth quarter is where things took a turn. Prior to this final period, neither team was able to pull fully ahead of the other. Nelsonville-York ended this trend by outscoring the Vikings 21-8 in the fourth. It was a full quarter of keep away for the Buckeyes, and the elite ball movement they demonstrated earned them this win.

This was the first time Nelsonville-York had beaten Vinton County in the last eight years, and only the fifth time in the rivalry’s history. It’s safe to say this was a big win for the Buckeyes, especially considering the margin of victory.

With two games left on their TVC-Ohio schedule, Nelsonville-York looks to finish strong at Wellston (2/11), and back home against Meigs (2/14). As for Vinton County, they hope to bounce back in one last TVC-Ohio matchup at home against Wellston (2/14).
