ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) – The owners of the Triple Nickel Diner in Chesterhill announced early Monday afternoon they will be closing the restaurant for good in the spring.

“It is with a heavy heart, but immense gratitude, that we announce the end of this incredible journey,” they wrote in a Facebook post. “For nearly a decade, the Triple Nickel has been more than just a place to eat—it has been a home away from home, a place for first dates, family celebrations, and countless conversations over coffee.”

“The joy this diner has brought us will last a lifetime. We love this place.”

So did many others.

Shortly after the announcement was posted, the comments started pouring in. The first captured the sentiment of many that followed:

“Oh, this sure makes me sad. Hands down, you are one of my very favorite restaurants on this planet. When we lived in Athens, Triple Nickel was our go-to Valentine’s Day dinner spot because it was just so special.”

Many commenters talked about the long drives they would make for a stop at the diner, which took its names from the state highway that runs through town (“Last summer I made it down to you guys no less than 5 times — from Tiffin, Ohio”).

Others reminisced about the food (“the best peanut butter pie ever”), the atmosphere (“makes you want to sit back after a meal and order another piece of pie and coffee”) and the traditions they built around the restaurant (“you are a part of our family’s core memories!”).

WOUB reached out to the owners to discuss their decision to close and whether at this point it looks like anyone else will continue to operate a restaurant in this location, but did not receive a response before this story was published.
