ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB)— The No. 2 ranked Ohio Bobcats took on the Stony Brook Seawolves in a fast paced physical matchup. Ultimately, the Bobcats would walk away with a 6-0 victory.
The first period started off slower with each team taking their time to set up looks that produced minimal scoring chances. The Bobcats, without star forward Laker Aldridge, took the first 15 minutes of the period to get going on offense. Once they were able to get traffic in front of Stony Brook goalie Steven Reganato, Luc Reeve would net the first goal of the night assisted by Lance Mengel, 1-0 Ohio. Just 30 seconds later, Nolan Abraham would tally another Bobcat goal with a top-shelf snipe giving Ohio a two goal lead heading into intermission.
Stony Brook brought the intensity to start the second penalty forcing Ohio to battle along the boards for o-zone possession. The Seawolves would draw a penalty and see their first power play of the night, but they were ultimately unsuccessful with Bobcat goalie Matt Zazon standing tall in the crease. Noah Holt would be the third Bobcat to score with a shot that sent Reganato’s water bottle flying, 3-0 Ohio. Stony Brook would head to the man advantage for the second time, a result of a Brady Gilbert trip, and would have their best chance of the frame but were unable to bury the puck.
The third period was similar to the first and second with each team coming out fast and physical. Ohio would head to their first powerplay four minutes into the third, Drake Albers would light the lamp on the man advantage extending the team’s lead to four. It was a tough night in net for Reganato who couldn’t find a way to stop the Bobcat offense. Graham Broadfoot would tip-in a Kevin Kasper shot with two minutes left in the game sealing it for Ohio. Lance Mengel would be the sixth Bobcat to send one past Reganato with just twenty seconds left.
The Bobcats would end the night with a 6-0 victory and a Zazon shutout. The second game of their weekend series was cancelled due to inclement weather. They will resume play next weekend at Niagara University to take on the No. 5 Purple Eagles.
