Athens residents will be able to help feed the hungry while enjoying local foods at a brand new fundraiser this summer.

City council member Steve Patterson announced the first annual "Bounty on the Bricks" festival at Monday night's council meeting.

The event is being coordinated by the Athens Foundation.

The fundraiser, which will be held from 6-10 p.m. on August 10, is a true "farm to table" event.

Attendees will be able to sit together at a long dining room table set up on Court Street, where they can enjoy locally produced foods and beverages.

Proceeds will go to programs geared to increasing food security in Athens County such as the Athens Food Bank and food pantires around the county.

In the event of rain, the fundraiser will be moved to the community center.

Patterson said that he is hoping for a turnout of about 300 people and is optimistic that Bounty on the Bricks will generate a large sum of money for the local hungry.

"If there's 300 people, at the amount that they're going to be asking for people to come and attend this event, it could raise as much as $15,000 which is a lot of money for the food pantry and the food bank," Patterson said.

Over the next few weeks, council members are expected to vote on several ordinances pertaining to the event, including one that will block off Court Street from Union to Washington.
