Fracking Story Earns WOUB Student Reporter National Recognition
< < Back to fracking-story-earns-woub-student-reporter-national-recognitionWOUB reporter Taylor Mirfenderski has been named a national winner by the Society of Professional Journalist Mark of Excellence awards. “Researchers Investigate Links Between Fracking and Water Contamination” was recognized as a first place winner in the Region 4 competition and went on to win the top national prize in the Television In-Depth Reporting category.
The package investigates the possibility of links between water contamination and hydraulic fracturing, known as ‘fracking.’ Mirfendereski talks with both community members who claim their water was contaminated due to fracking in the area and to oil company representatives who believe there is no connection between the two. The package was a part of a call in program Newswatch Indepth: Fracking Frenzy that aired on WOUB in February 2012.
First-place national winners will be acknowledged at the Excellence in Journalism 2013 conference August 24-26 in Anaheim, Calif.
Mirfendereski is a 2013 graduate in Journalism in the Honors Tutorial College at Ohio University.
