Kentucky County Becomes HeartSafe Community

A northeast Kentucky county is the latest to become a HeartSafe Community, a designation recognizing efforts to improve responses to people suffering from cardiac arrest.
State health officials say Boyd County has joined the list that includes Warren, Shelby and Jefferson counties.
The HeartSafe Community program was started in 2011 by officials in the Department for Public Health.
It's seen as a way to help communities improve survival chances for people suffering cardiac arrest.
HeartSafe Communities meet a combination of factors meant to improve a community's ability to recognize and respond to cardiac arrest.
Those factors include early access to emergency care in which bystanders recognize the symptoms and call 911. Other factors include the early administering of CPR and early care given by advanced life support personnel.
