Bowling Green Trounces Ohio Baseball
< < Back to bowling-green-trounces-ohio-baseballIn a rubber match with the Bowling Green Falcons, all things went wrong for the Ohio Bobcats in an 11-1 loss on Sunday.
Freshman righty Zac Carey confounded Ohio hitters through eight innings of the Falcons’ blowout victory that kept Ohio (19-14, 6-6) from reaching 20 wins.
Carey allowed a run on four hits, struck out three Bobcat batters and walked five.
“He was around the zone,” Ohio manager Rob Smith said. “He threw a lot of strikes. He has three pitches for strikes, which is always going to make a pitcher tough to deal with.”
The Falcons struck first and early in the first inning. Brandon Howard drew a one-out walk, and then stole second and third base. A wild pitch brought him home to give Bowling Green a run on no hits in the first.
Howard was a thorn in the ‘Cats side all day, as he recorded a hit, two RBI, four walks, and three stolen bases.
Jesse Rait picked up the Falcons’ first hit with a leadoff homer over the scoreboard in left-center field. A bases loaded walk and sacrifice fly gave Bowling Green a 4-0 lead.
The sixth inning saw another three runs put up for the Falcons, and it started much like the second inning – with a leadoff homer, this time from Randy Righter. Howard drove in another run with a single, and reliever Christan Botter walked in a run.
Botter relieved Ohio starter Jake Rudnicki. The Bobcat righty worked five innings, and allowed six runs – four of which were earned – on five hits.
The Falcons put up another three spot in the seventh. A third wild pitch from Ohio pitchers drew the same result the first two did: a run scored. Trey Keegan’s single to center gave the visitors a 10-0 lead.
Keegan added another RBI single in the ninth to give the Falcons their 11th and final run. He drove in four runs and record two hits.
In the bottom of the ninth, pinch hitters Tirey Burch and Tony Giannini picked up two straight hits to knock Carey out of the game. A walk loaded the bases for Logan Cozart to bring in Ohio’s lone run with an RBI groundout.
Manny DeJesus and Jake Madsen had the other two hits for the Green and White.
The ‘Cats defense was sloppy on in the loss with six errors to go along with three wild pitches.
The Bobcats get back on the diamond Tuesday for a road matchup with Youngstown State in Youngstown, Ohio, at 5:30 p.m.
