The Marietta College Pioneers opened up the season in impressive fashion as they defeated the Penn State Beaver Nittany Lions by a score of 8-0 in the Marietta College Classic on Saturday.

Coach Joe Bergin’s squad played well in all facets of the game in the team’s first victory of the season. The Pioneers did not allow Penn State Beaver to get a shot off all game. Marietta, unlike its opponent, got plenty of shots off. The Pioneers had 52 shots total and 33 shots on goal. Six different players recorded goals for Marietta.

Wesley Riley, who led the Pioneers in scoring last season, led them in scoring Saturday. He finished with two goals that came only 1:05 apart. Riley also had an assist Saturday. Ryan Stephens was also impressive as he had a goal and two assists.

Luke Saunders opened up the scoring with a goal on an assist from Riley at the 9:37 mark. Lucas Eick and Stephens added goals in the first half as well.  The Pioneers entered halftime with a 3-0 lead. They remained aggressive in the second half, though.

Marietta would go on to score five goals in the second half. Four of the five Pioneer second-half goals came in a span of only 4:42. Clayton Cowgill, Michael Nauls and Lucas Probst also scored for the Pioneers Saturday.

Marietta looks to continue its strong play tomorrow against the St. Vincent (Penn.) Bearcats (0-1). Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
