< < Back to rio-grande-topples-bluefield-2-0-victoryThe University of Rio Grande secured its fifth victory of the season Wednesday night, 2-0 over Bluefield College. After a beating against Lindsey Wilson, the RedStorm bounced back with a win against the Rams.
Freshman Carrie Mathes and senior Mary Beth Schramm scored the RedStorm’s only two goals of the game during the first half while junior Allison Keeney recorded her fourth shutout of the season.
Mathes beat Rams goalkeeper Kayla Richardson in the 11th minute on a one-on-one play after receiving a pass on the left wing from Melissa Dickerson that boosted the RedStorm up 1-0 in the first half. Schramm contributed at the 21-minute mark when she rebounded a shot past Richardson, making it 2-0 by intermission.
“I was very pleased at half time, and just told the girls to be doing the same thing and we will get the results we want by the end of the game,” head coach Callum Morris said.
Rio Grande finished the game with a 13-10 edge in shots, as well as 10-5 shots on goal. Keeney shut out all five shots in net for the RedStorm. Rio continued its up-and-down pattern of play, improving to an overall record of 5-4 and 2-1 in the Mid-South Conference.
The RedStorm have a chance to continue their winning streak and improve their overall record next Wednesday, Oct. 2, when they host the University of Pikeville. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
