WWII Ship Travels Through the Region
< < Back to ?p=134393A piece of WWII history has been traveling through the region along the Ohio River. The USS LST-325, which was once used in the waters of the D-Day invasion in Normandy, has traveled the river between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh over the last two weeks and is scheduled to return to Cincinnati on Sept. 11.
The boat was designed in 1942 as a way to land battle ready tanks, vehicles and soldiers and is manned by a volunteer crew made up of sailors from across the nation, to educate the public about the ship’s history.
There were more than 1,000 LST ships made during WWII, and the LST-325 is the last remaining, operational ship in its original war configuration left in the US.
The ship is schedule to dock in Cincinnati Friday night and will be available for tours Sept. 12 – Sept. 16. The ship is permanently docked in Evansville, Indiana and will return to Evansville on Sept. 19.
