COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Ohioans could register online to vote under a proposal being reviewed by a state legislative panel.

The bill would direct Ohio’s elections chief to create a secure, online registration process for voters. Applicants would need to provide an Ohio driver’s license or state ID card number.

Currently, Ohio voters can update their addresses online but can’t register to vote.

An Ohio House government oversight committee was slated to take testimony on the bill Tuesday. The Senate already has passed the measure.

The proposal also would allow residents in the key swing state to declare their political party affiliation when registering to vote or changing their addresses. Ohio voters now declare their affiliations by casting a ballot in a primary.

Residents still could choose to remain unaffiliated.
