Lady Spartans Run Away From Meigs During the Second Half
< < Back toAfter a slow first half, the Alexander Lady Spartans picked up momentum in the second half, defeating the Lady Marauders 49-26.
Alexander struggled with shooting in the first half, but opened up the second half on a 6-0 run. The Lady Spartans relied heavily on free throws during the game, shooting 20 for 26 from the line. Alexander also managed to play strong defense, keeping Meigs from scoring in the second half until the final two minutes of the third quarter.
“I felt like we knew we were just going through the motions and we were going to win based on talent,” Alexander coach Cory McKnight explained. “In the second half, I thought we were going to win based on pure effort.”
The Richardson sisters played a key role in the Lady Spartans’ win. Leah Richardson made nearly all of her shots, shooting 13 for 16, totaling 17 points on the night. Rachel Richardson contributed 12 points as well.
After a first half full of tough defense, Meigs fell apart during the second. The Lady Marauders struggled with turnovers in the game, notching 11 in total. The team struggled all around with scoring. From the field, Meigs made just 5 of 24 attempts. The Lady Marauders shot 4 for 15 behind the arc.
Alexander faces a tough stretch of games, playing Huntington, West Virgina on Jan. 16. Huntington currently ranks as the second best team in West Virginia. Two days later on Jan. 18, the Lady Spartans match up against Waterford, who’s ranked first in Ohio for Division IV.
The Lady Marauders take a break, returning to play against Nelsonville-York on Jan. 21.
